In every life people use the word habit to mean different things. It's an ambiguous word that can create confusion.

Habit Myth #1

What the word habit really means

In Behavior Design, a habit is a behavior that people do without thinking very much. The more automatic the behavior, the stronger the habit.

Decisions that require thinking are the opposite of habits.

You can place any behavior on a spectrum of automaticity, with decisions on the left side (not at all automatic) and strong habits on the right (extremely automatic).

There is no threshold on the spectrum where a behavior suddenly becomes a habit. It's all a matter of degree.
